Mosquito

A mosquito is any member of a group of about 3,500 species of small insects belonging to the order Diptera. Within Diptera, mosquitoes constitute the family Culicidae. The word "mosquito" is Spanish and Portuguese for "little fly". But unlike flies, mosquitos have evolved to feed on blood (animal or human) causing all sorts of problems including serious health hazards. Once these flying pests pierce the skin with its mouthpart, the hypodermic needle-like proboscis they begin to suck human blood as if they are re-fueling at a petrol station never worrying about the cost of fuel.

Mosquitos are among the most annoying pests one can be affected by in the house and outdoors. Mosquitoes are also far from harmless as there are many viruses such as a Dengue fever that they can transmit when they bite. Although rare in Canada Ontario, a mosquito-borne viral diseases still can happen.

The following pest control and management techniques can help reduce the changes of mosquitoes invading your property and keep them at bay.

Mosquitos Live in Humid and Damp Areas

Mosquitoes like damp, enclosed spaces where they can breed and swarm and overgrown bushes, trees, and other shrubbery make that possible. Doing basic landscaping of your yard and giving everything a good trim can greatly lessen the chances of a mosquito infestation taking over your home and attacking you every time you go outdoors.

While shade is important for human comfort, it can also encourage mosquitos to settle down in a particular outdoor area where from there they can enter the house every time a window or door opens or through crevices. Make sure you have minimized shade in your yard unless it is man-made and you should have a plug-in mosquito repellant or it should be sprayed regularly.

Standing Water Is Mosquitos Dream Come True

Like many pests, mosquitoes are attracted by standing pools of water or the effects of bad drainage such as a blocked drain on a roof. Basically, any amount of standing still water should be avoided when mosquitoes become a problem. Make routine checks of all your pipes and household drains to make sure they aren’t blocked with leaves or other foliage at the turn of each season. This may also prevent other pests like mice and cockroaches from setting up camp in your home.

Female mosquitoes always look for a damp place (preferably a pool of stagnant water) to lay eggs in after they have fed on the blood of either animal or human. If a mosquito finds standing pools of water around your property at breeding season, they are sure to begin nesting. For that reason, you need to make sure your downspouts and gutters are also cleared and fully functioning.

Nature to the Rescue

Certain plants have natural mosquito-repelling properties and smells. By placing these plants around the house, on windowsills, and also planting them outside in your garden, you can reduce the chances of or even prevent a mosquito infestation naturally. Basil, peppermint, lavender, tea tree, marigolds, and citronella are good plants for this purpose. These plants are generally pleasing to most people and do not cause allergies.

Points Of Mosquitoes Entry

Windows and doors aren’t the only entryways for mosquitoes. They can get in from vents and even minuscule openings. As a general rule however it is best to keep your doors tightly shut and if there are any gaps in the sides, use a rubber lining to make them airtight. You can also add fly screens on your windows and even doors so if they are open for air they still do not invite mosquitoes and other pests.

Furthermore, mosquitoes are attracted by the natural carbon dioxide that all human beings emit. There are different approaches when dealing with domestic mosquito control as opposed to controlling mosquitoes around commercial businesses. For example: installing an outdoor fan or mosquito zapper so that the mosquitoes can be kept at bay may be idal in commercial settings where as wearing mosquito-repellant lotion and gels is also a helpful way to not end up with bitten and sore red skin in residential settings.
