Chia seeds spill all over your kitchen counter. Little black dots each seed about the size of, say, the period at the end of this sentence—seem harmless enough. But then, what if some of those dots move? Because you might have more on your hands than just a spill. Some bugs impersonate chia seeds. We’ll look at these tiny disguisers and learn how to recognize them.
The Curious Case of Seed-Like Bugs
Camouflage, in the bug’s world, is a survival tactic. Insect evolution has led some to resemble something as small as seeds. The likeness will help them hide from predators and, unfortunately, from us. Knowing what to look for can save your pantry and your peace of mind.
- Carpet Beetle Larva
Carpet beetle larvae are small, sometimes mistaken for seeds. They have dark, oval-shaped bodies covered with coarse hairs. They feed on natural fibers by chewing carpets, clothes, and furniture, residing in hidden areas and causing damage slowly.
To locate them, look for movement. Seeds cannot crawl; these larvae can. They prefer the dark and to be left alone. Regular cleaning will prevent an infestation. Vacuum your carpets and inspect stored clothes to keep them at bay.
- Flea Droppings
Flea dirt is not a bug but a sign of their presence. This is the feces of fleas and is a fine black speck-like matter that resembles either ground pepper or chia seeds sprinkled on your pet’s bedding. The fleas feed off of your pets, which for them can be very discomforting and health-wise disastrous in all aspects.
Start checking your pet for flea dirt: Just take a fine-tooth comb and run it on your pet. Then just tap the comb over a white piece of paper or a white cloth. If black specks fall and turn reddish-brown when wet, then its flea dirt.
- Spider Beetles
The spider beetles are small and seed-like arthropods. They are oval, with extended appendages; their color is shiny brown or black. These insects, when present in stored commodities, grains, flour, or dried fruits, can create an infestation.
Finding spider beetles mainly involves searching one’s pantry. One should check food packaging for signs of an infestation. Food items that are infested should be gotten rid of and the area around them cleaned thoroughly. Proper storage of food will prevent them from coming back.
- Booklice
Booklice are minute insects, about the size of a seed or a speck of dust. They love dampness and feed on mold and mildew. They can be found near books, wallpaper, or damp wood.
The secret to booklice is to reduce the humidity. Buy a dehumidifier; any dampness issues in your house need to be stopped. Store books and paper products in dry places. If drier, these insects will find your house less welcoming.
- Fruit Fly Pupa
The pupae of the fruit flies are small and brown, like seeds. They can develop close to some rotting fruits or vegetables. Therefore, any seed-like structures around your fruit bowl can be diagnosed as fruit fly pupae. The removal of over-ripened fruits and vegetables and a wipe-down will get rid of them. Take out the garbage on time and keep counters clean. It will break their life cycle, and never in the future will there be an infestation.
Keeping the Little Invaders Out
Now that you know who the culprits are, you can prevent infestation. The best two defences against this pest would include regular cleaning and vigilance by sealing up food containers, reducing clutter where the bugs can hide, and looking after your pets—specially inspect areas that they often hang out.
Remember, not all the specks are seeds. A closer look will show you the uninvited guests. Be vigilant, and you will save your house from these little pests.
