Sunningdale is a large village with retail areas and a population of approximately 16,000 people. It is located in the extreme south-east of Berkshire. The Old Course is home to St. John’s College, Cambridge University. The Sunningdale Estate was originally part of a Benedictine Nunnery. However, it was closed by Henry VIII. Then it was acquired by John Fisher, the Bishop of Rochester and executor of Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of Henry VII. The landscape of Sunningdale is the main attraction. The course is built on a hilltop, and the Old and New courses have been designed by noted architect Willie Pary Jr. They have very few flat lies, giving the course an air of secluded beauty. It has also been noted that the original routing of Raynor’s 1886 course is still in place. The hillocks and humps on the course provide strategic interest.
